Project Background
A newly built cold chain logistics distribution center in Northern Europe, with a total floor area of 45,000 sq. m., required high-speed industrial door systems for its three temperature-controlled zones: a blast freezing zone (-30°C), a chilled storage zone (0–4°C), and an ambient sorting area. The facility operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with forklift traffic at peak throughput exceeding 400 vehicle movements per hour across all zones. The logistics operator's engineering specification required door systems capable of sustaining this operational intensity while minimizing cold air loss — a critical efficiency parameter directly affecting the facility's energy costs and carbon footprint reporting.

Challenges & Requirements
Cold chain logistics facilities impose severe performance demands on door systems:

Oredy's Solution
Oredy supplied 54 sets of its PVC high-speed rolling door system, configured across the three temperature zones with zone-specific adaptations. For the blast freezing zone, low-temperature motor assemblies rated to -35°C were specified, with cold-weather PVC curtain material maintaining flexibility at sub-zero temperatures. Door opening speed was set to 1.8 m/s for forklift transit lanes, exceeding the client's minimum specification. The PVC curtain design incorporates a bottom bar with a patented breakaway coupling — when struck by a forklift, the bottom bar separates and the curtain rolls up automatically; upon the door's next activation, the bottom bar self-latches back into position without any manual reset requirement. All 54 units were equipped with overhead microwave motion sensors providing reliable detection of forklifts and personnel. The control panel includes a cycle counter with RS485 data output, connected to the facility's energy management system.

Results & Client Feedback
Six months after commissioning, the facility's energy manager reported a 28% reduction in heating and cooling energy consumption at the inter-zone doorways compared to the previous facility's conventional door system benchmark (applied proportionally). The self-repair function was activated 34 times across all units during the first six months — a figure the facility's operations manager described as within expected parameters for a high-throughput forklift environment — with zero manual interventions required. The blast freezing zone doors maintained reliable operation throughout a period of sustained -28°C ambient temperatures, confirming the cold-weather component specification. The logistics operator has subsequently specified Oredy high-speed doors as the standard for two additional distribution center projects under development.
